     Ninth Battalion

Between the time interval of May 5 and 6, several events occurred in Habib Bin

    Madahir Batalion including:

    A. Salmanfarsi Battalion’s destroyed positions in Moharam operational axis were

handed over to Habib Bin Madahir.

    B. Habib Battalion’s commander on an emphatic order from commander of Brigade

    27 headed for Theran.

    C. The Iraqi Third Corps Command planned to launch a heavy conter-attack

on Iraninan positions in Garmdasht using commando brigades 31 and 33

and several T-72 tanks from armored brigade10.

Concerning these developments, later on, Habib Bin Madahir Batallion commander

    had told Mohammad Ebrahim Hemmat:

“... Look Haji! Our battalion has been in the front lines since first day of the operation,

    after Ghojehi’s[Salmanfarsi battalion’s commander]martyrdom on May

5, 1982], its position was handed over to Habib Battalion. The very same night,

Hajahmad obligated me to accompany my own brother’s dead body [martyr

Mohammad Movhaddansh, battalion’s deputy] to Tehran. I refused to go, however,

he did not accept. So I went to Tehran to take part in my brother’s funeral

procession. As I did not expect the second phase of the operations to begin so
soon ,I assigned Hussein Islamamiyat as caretaker commander and I was out of
    the region for forty-eight hours.”1
Around Thursday afternoon, May 6, 1982 and based on monitored enemy
radio conversations our Nasr-2 headquarters is informed that the Iraqi army
was preparing to launch a very heavy counter-attack on friendly forces in Moharram
axis using commando brigade33, reinforced commando brigade 31and a
tank battallion from armored brigade10. Less than half an hour after the warning,
Hussein Khaleghi, head of Moharram operational axis contacting Mohammad
Ebrahim Hemmat, deputy commander of Brigade 27, announced that Iraqi
commando units and tank battalions had invaded Habib Bin Madahir positions
    in Garmdasht area.
